Guantánamo.- Rafael Arrate (Santiago de Cuba), Javier García (Artemisa) and Yoandry Freyre (Sancti Spíritus) were the medalists, in this order, in the first stage of the Guantánamo-Pinar del Río-Havana Cuba's National Road Cycling Tour, which started yesterday in this city.
Arrate, champion of the day, also won the intermediate sprint of this first stage, earning thus the right to wear the yellow jersey of leader.
Havana.- With one day in advance, Lázaro Bruzón won his sixth crown in the Cuban national men´s chess championships, as he totals six points in eight of the nine rounds, thus becoming unattainable for the rest of the contestants.
In the last round, the largest winner of these events drew with Yusnel Bacallao in Santa Clara´s Chess Palace, thus taking an advantage of 1.5 units over his closest pursuers.
Granma.- With music, dancing, hugs and kisses, hundreds of inhabitants of Bayamo city, capital of Granma province, welcomed the members of the team that represented Cuba in the 59th Caribbean Baseball Series, which finished last Tuesday in Culiacán, Mexico.
Havana.- After the contract signing of slugger Alfredo Despaigne with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, from the Japanese Baseball League (NPB by its Spanish acronym), Higinio Vélez, president of the Cuban Federation, told JIT sports publication that pitcher Raidel Martinez and outfielder Leonardo Urgellés will do the same soon with the Chunichi Dragons.
Havana.- With their 1-0 loss to the local side of the Mexicali Águilas, Cuba's Granma Alazanes said goodbye to the 59 th Caribbean Baseball Series in the city of Culiacán, Mexico.
Camagüey, ''Entre cielo y tierra, Mireya Luis'', a biographical book on the former volleyball player from Camaguey, Cuba, will be launched in this central eastern city as part of the literary program for the celebration of the Culture Week.
Matanzas.- Gaspar "El Curro" Pérez, Rigoberto Rosique and Silvio García, and 17 other athletes born in the province of Matanzas, went down in history as the first players inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame of this territory.
Havana.- The Granma baseball team, representing Cuba in the Caribbean Series, beat Puerto Rico´s Criollos de Caguas for its second victory and qualified to the semi-finals.
Cuba scored first in the second inning when Carlos Benitez brought in Dennis Laza with a single to the centerfield, out of starter Jarret Leverett.
Havana.- The World Series of Boxing (WSB) defending champions Cuba´s Domadores had a perfect debut in the Seventh series wheb it swept Caciques de Venezuela 5-0 in the Havana city Sports Coliseum.
Culiacan, Mexico, Slugger Alfredo Despaigne, Granma SorrelsÂ´ clean-up hitter, praised the level of all participating teams in the Caribbean Baseball Series, Culiacán-2017, but also warned that Cuba will be the champion.
Havana.- Carlos Martí, manager of Granma, team representing Cuba in the Caribbean Baseball Series, held in Culiacán city, Mexico, said that winning the first game is very important in the aspirations to advance in the event.
Cuba beat 4-0 the Dominican Republic in the opening game of the 59 th Caribbean Series, with win to Lázaro Blanco and excellent relief by lefty Liván Moinelo.
