Judo: Cuba Wins Three Medals at the Paris Grand Slam

Cuba won two silver medals today at the closing day of the Judo Grand Slam in Paris, France, which was attended by 388 representatives from 54 countries and finished in ninth place for nations.

The Cuban male and female teams concluded ninth with silver medals won by Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg) and Asley Gonzalez (90 kg), and a bronze by Celia Maria Laborde (48 kg ).

The other Cubans who gave points to their country were Oscar Brayson ( +100), who reached the fifth position and both Yanet Bermoy (52) and Maricet Espinosa (63), who finished seventh.

This Sunday, Ortiz won the silver laurel, after being defeated by ippon in the final against Japan's Megumi Tashimoto, just like Gonzalez, who lost by Yuko against Georgian Varlam Liparteliani, while Brayson ended fifth after losing by ippon against South Korean Guham Cho .

Ortiz's performance included three wins by Ippon, while Gonzalez ha d four victories by Ippon, Wazari, Golden Rule and Yuko, in that order.

Laborde won the bronze medal on Saturday, through a win by Wazari in the repechage against French Aurore Clement, according to the contest website.

The other members of Cuba team in the tournament were Dayaris Mestre (48), Anailis Dorvigni and Aliuska Ojeda (57), Gilberto Solar (66) and Magdiel Estrada (73).

The list is completed by Heidy Abreu (+78), Onix Cortes (70), Kaliema Antomachín (78), Jorge Martinez (81), Ivan Silva (81) and Jose Armenteros (100).

Ahead of Cuba (0-2-1) in the standings were France (5-1-2), Japan (4-2-10), Mongolia ( 1-2-1), Netherlands ( 1-1-2), Georgia ( 1-1-1), Uzbekistan ( 1-0-1), Czech Republic (1-0-0) and South Korea (0-2-4), respectively .
