Playing with the black pieces, Dominguez, the best Latin American player with an ELO rating of 2,719 points, beat Polgar (2,699) after 46 moves of a Sicilian Defense.

Meanwhile, playing with the white pieces, Bruzon (2,673) managed to hold Ponomariov (2,764), a former world champion of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), to a draw in 32 moves of a Spanish Opening.

The Cuban players will face the same opponents on Wednesday and Dominguez only needs a draw to advance to the quarterfinal round of the tournament or Round of 8. Bruzon, on the other hand, needs a win to advance or another draw to force the tie-break rapid games on Thursday.

In other results on Tuesday, Ukrainian GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2,768) tied with Chinese GM Xiangzhi Bu (2,675), Azerbaijan’s GM Vugar Gashimov (2,760) downed Danish GM Peter Heine Nielsen (2,681), and Russian GM Vladimir Potkin (2,682) defeated his compatriot GM Alexander Grischuk (2,746).

Finally, Azerbaijan’s GM Teimor Radjabov beat Russian GM Dmitry Jakovenko (2,736), Russian GM Peter Svidler (2,739) defeated American GM Gata Kamsky (2,741), and Czech GM David Navara (2,722) beat Ukrainian GM Yaroslav Zherebukh (2,590).(ACN)
