Cuba Beats the U.S. to Defend NORCECA Volleyball Championship Title

Cuba edged the United States in five sets (25-23, 29-27, 25-27, 19-25, 15-8) on Saturday to claim the gold medals and remain champions of the Men’s North, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Volleyball Championship that took place in the Puerto Rican city of Mayaguez.

The Cuban attack was led by Wilfredo Leon with 31 points while Fernando Hernandez contributed 17 units to the winners’ cause. Henry Bell and Isbel Mesa also scored in double digits for the Cuban side with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Methew Anderson was the best scorer for the United States with 18 units while Clayton Stanley contributed 16, and David Lee, 13.

“It was a strong match and also a very tense one, being a young team it feels wonderful to win” said Leon.

“I am very happy that we could put a great spectacle for the fans and much more with a young team that is playing for the first time together,” noted Orlando Samuels, the Cuban head coach.

It was Cuba’s fifteenth title in 22 similar events.

Cuban Keibel Gutierrez was elected the Most Valuable Player of the tournament as he was awarded with three individual titles: Best Libero, Best Receiver and Best Digger.

Leon received the awards for Best Spiker and Best Scorer, and also Cuban Fernando Hernandez was the Best Server. American David Lee was the Best Blocker and Canadian Dustin Schneider was the Best Setter.

The “Jim Coleman Award” was granted to Cuban Orlando Samuels, as the best coach. Translated by: Juan Carlos Caballero Puig
